Bombing Suspect In Court

The man suspected of trying to blow up a plane on Christmas Day made his first court appearance today.Drew Levinson reports from Detroit.Suspected terrorist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is back in a Michigan federal prison waiting to see what's next for him.Friday, a not guilty plea was entered for the 23-year old man accused of trying to blow up an airliner on Christmas Day.Under tight security, Abdulmutallab said very little at his four minute arraignment. He wore a white t-shirt and tan pants and answered "yes" in English when a judge asked if he understood the charges.A woman who sat 6 rows from Abdulmutallab on the plane was at the hearing.Hebba Aref says, 'seeing him again and I realized wow, that's the guy that tried to kill me and hurt the plane and do more damage on ground."The government claims Abdulmutallab sneaked explosives in his underwear on board a Delta Northwest flight from Amsterdam to Detroit. One of the six charges against him carries a life sentence.Abdulmutallab could be offered a plea deal in exchange for information about his contacts abroad. It sounds like the government has a strong case against Abdulmutallab, with eye witness accounts and the underwear as evidence.. but the defense hasn't tipped its hand yet.Miriam Siefer says, "frankly today is just the first step in a very long process, other than that we are not prepared to discuss the case"Outside the courthouse members of the local Muslim community marched to denounce terrorism.Majed Moughni says, "we are not going to let terrorists hijack our religion"Abdulmutallab's attorneys didn't challenge the government's request to keep him in custody....and that's where he remains.
